April 20, 2009
The 2008/09 Winter Skiing and Riding Season has come to an end for most resorts and it ended with Glorious Sunshine and Spring Conditions.  Albeit, there was a fast moving bout with winter on Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning that brought some fresh snow, cold temperatures and winds to the mountains.
All in all a pretty decent Winter… not one that would go in the record books but I believe the Snowsports Industry is still healthy in our economic times.
This past week, I have been winding down the reports and season and my last radio ski report on KTHO AM590 was this past Sunday so it’s great being able to sleep in past 5:30am.  I am also winding down the Après Ski Show aired on KMTN TV 9 & 19 by the end of April.  With this I am concentrating on my Bike the West events and have re-opened online registration for America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride set for June 7, 2009, with the recent releasing of spots from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you are interested in participating in this year’s event, please register at bikethewest.com.  There are a limited number of spots available and online registration will be taken on a first come – first serve basis until Sold Out.
Tuesday evening, during the quick moving blizzard, I attended the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition’s monthly meeting as I am a Charter Member and we finalized the promotion of Bike 2 Work-School & Play Week, coming up May 11-15, 2009.  Please visit TahoeBike.org to sign up and log your miles for that week and a chance to win prizes and such.  Membership information is also available on their website and they are looking for volunteers as well to help man their Spooner Junction Rest Stop for both America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride and Tour de Tahoe.
I got to the LTSS Chamber’s Mixer at the Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort this past Thursday as it was Media Madness night with most all local media having booths there to promote their products.  I didn’t realize how popular this resort is as the pool was filled with lots of kids and the resort seemed to be busy with owners enjoying spring break / Easter week.  The event was fun and I purchased a few extra raffle tickets and won a round of golf for four at Bijou Golf
On Saturday, I invited all the Crew from KMTN TV to join me on the slopes at Heavenly for a Final Ski/Ride day and “Thank You” for their time and input to KMTN TV.  Owners of KMTN, Michael & Michelle McKinney, South Shore Morning Show Co-Hosts, Bryan and Holly were able to make it. We missed Matt & Jen as they encountered car problems that morning which prohibited them to meet us.  It was a great day with brilliant sunshine and spring conditions.  We met at Stagecoach Lodge and head up to the East Peak Area and took several runs off Dipper and Comet and then headed to the California side to ski both Canyon and Ridge Runs.  Michael decided to dress in shorts for his final day of riding and he regretted it as he felt his legs kept getting pelted by snow and by end of the day also got sunburned.  Not a good idea to expose bare skin in this fashion without using Sunscreen and If one falls in the snow, you also run the risk of getting a raspberry burn as well.  Lots of locals also enjoying the final weekend of Heavenly and everyone just having fun in the sun and on the snow. This was a casual – social day for our group and we just enjoyed skiing, riding and fun chair lift conversations throughout the morning.  By afternoon the snow was softening a little too much and we decided to end the day with top to bottom runs from the top of the Olympic Express to Stagecoach Lodge with cocktails served by everyone’s good buddy bartender, Stu Coffey.
After that, we headed over to the Fox & Hound for more cocktails and some great Pizza to finish the day and the season at Heavenly, before heading to the KMTN Studio to produce my show.
Bike riding season is upon us and hundreds of bicyclists are out and about riding the roadways around Lake Tahoe, on Hwy 89 – Tahoe City to Truckee and in the Carson Valley all along Foothill road and climbing passes.  Mountain Bike trails around the Lake are barely accessible as the snow is starting to melt but the Pine Nuts are in good shape for riding.  Local area Golf Courses are starting to green up and may be opening this week as well.
After today, Kirkwood and Sugarbowl are planning to stay open through Sunday, April 26 and Squaw is planning to stay open through May 10.  Mount Rose is planning to re-open Fridays through Sundays this weekend and possibly one more weekend after that. One other resort, Mammoth Mountain is also looking to stay open into May…
That’s this week’s blog.  Have a great Spring & Summer.  Buckle up and drive safely everywhere you go, Peace & Love – Mahalo.
See you next time,
Curtis Fong

Blue World Blog 4.13.09

April 13, 2009

Well, we got through Easter Weekend and the weather was beautiful with Spring Conditions returning to Slopes after an early – mid week bout with the return of Winter.

I was able to get out and ski Heavenly on Wednesday when they reported, “Dust on Crust”… about 1-2” of fresh snow and I was surprised that the conditions were really good. Mostly Cloudy skies with light snow and gusty winds continued that morning but the light layer of fresh snow and cold temperatures provided great carving conditions on the Machine Groomed runs. I tested the conditions Off Piste and they were still Hard Firm packed snow, so I continued to ski on the Machine Groomed runs and had a great day of cruising.

Kirkwood reported up to a foot of new snow on that day and I decided to head out there on Thursday. I took a warm up run on Chair 5 and the Machine Groomed runs were in great shape. Moved over to Chair 11 and continued to warm up on Buckboard and then Conestoga which were groomed with great corduroy and great carving surfaces. After a few warm up runs I headed up Chair 6 to sample Sentinel Bowl. The wind was blowing pretty good at the top of the lift and helped push me across the traverse to the entrance to Sentinel Bowl. This run is a great run and one of my favorites – wide open and usually one of the higher angle runs that are groomed nightly. It was in great shape and the cut powder in Jim’s Run was also very skiable. I tried to make it to Chair 4 after that on the backside and by the time I rode up Chair 2 to get there, the wind increased and it was closed. Darn! Instead I rode up the Vista T-Bar, which was still running, and there were a number of skiers & riders also lining up to ride the T-Bar. I skied off the top of Boogie Slide down the Thunder Saddle and found my powder turns - 8-12” of powder and was well worth the journey. I took a few more cruisers and called it a day.

Easter Sunday was yet another day to hit the slopes at Heavenly, the beautiful Spring weather returned and the Stagecoach Gang had their traditional Biscuits & Gravy breakfast ready and waiting at 8:30am. Steve Peache, local photographer and videographer, met me there and I was really surprised that the parking lot was not full at 8:30am that morning. Steve assisted me in shooting video for a new opening for my Après Ski Show, which airs on KMTN TV. I helped orchestrate the shots and solicited my Stagecoach friends to be involved as well. After that we headed up the mountain and shot some great carving footage off the Olympic Lift and did several runs and a couple of Stand Up promos. Bob Hasset, operator of Camp Richardson Resort, joined me to ski down a run for the camera.
We moved over to the Dipper Express and decided to ski over to the California side. Ellie’s was groomed top to bottom that day and lots of folks were enjoying the vertical drop and steeper angle pitch off this run that morning. Steve and I decided to shoot in the “Pinnacles” which was formerly call Ski Ways by local Heavenly skiers / riders and was a great place to duck into to on stormy days as the tree skiing in there is one of the best. Heavenly created a wide access and widen out this area and a real run is now established down through this area to which they occasionally groom. Steve invited, Anne, a long time local and Heavenly skier to join in the video shoot. The surface was still a little firm packed when we skied and video’d it but I was surprised on how many trees were in fact removed to create this run. On my way back to the Nevada side, I joined Anne and skied the main throat of Milky Way Bowl and it was good. On my way back on the road, I was doing Mach 10 in a tuck to gain enough speed to get over the hump under the Mott Lift and hit a patch of soft snow and caught an edge and went down. It all happened in an instant. I picked myself up and told myself… “That was Stupid!” Nobody saw me fall so it doesn’t count in my book, except the pain from the fall…

My son met me on the slopes by noon. My daughter was to join us as well, but didn’t make it this Easter. I skied a few more runs with my son as well as with some of the Stagecoach gang, Chris & Meliss Larson, Dennis McMasters and others in the bumps of Little Dipper. I took a few more cruisers with my son and decided to call it a day as the snow was really softening by this time and the skis were grabbing, as I had no fresh wax to apply. We stopped at the World Famous Fox & Hound for an Easter Lunch, which consisted of an order of Teriyaki Wings and a Spinach & Garlic Pizza. Mmmm Good!

Many resorts have called it Quits after Easter Sunday and here’s the line up of those remaining open this week:

Heavenly has closed Boulder Lodge & lift access to the mountain. Stagecoach, the Gondola and Cal Base remains open through Sunday April 19.

Sierra at Tahoe has their backside closed but the Front Side and West bowl is still open. Their last day will be Monday, April 20 with Customer Appreciation Day offering a $20 lift ticket from 9am till 2pm.

Blue World Blog 4.06.09

April 6, 2009

Spring Conditions on the slopes continued this past week with lots of sunshine and warming temperatures. Many resorts are starting to reduce their reported snow depth bases. There is still plenty of snow, but start watching for bare spots and obstacles, especially on the lower elevation runs. These are usually marked so you can avoid them, but they are starting to pop up – just be aware and ski or ride with care.

“Spring Conditions” is a blanket surface condition statement that can mean anything, but for skiing and riding purposes it is usually referring to Hard or Firm Snow, which freezes at night and then softens during the day. This freeze/thaw cycle creates what is called Corn Snow or Frozen Granular type snow that can be very delightful to ski and ride on – sometimes the feeling of skiing on a smooth and buttery surface.

Spring Corn Snow will form on South Facing Slopes and the general rule of thumb is to follow the sun on the slopes as those surfaces will soften first in the morning and more so during the day. As the day progresses, the warming temps can also make the snow too soft and sticky and I would recommend carrying a bar of rub-on ski wax and apply it to the surface of your board(s) through out the day to help you slide better.

But, what am I talking about… according to the National Weather Service, it looks like a chance of fresh snow and winter conditions this week. According to Snowforecast.com there is the potential of as much as 10-15”. Keep your fingers crossed for that!

Last Saturday, Heavenly’s Spring Loaded ’09 continued with the 6th Annual Gunbarrel 25 event hosted by Glen Plake. I was there to assist and call the play-by-play, which is a good thing and great excuse for me to not have to embarrass myself in attempting 25 runs down the famous Gunbarrel Run. Over 120 participants signed up to take the challenge and this was the largest field since the event started. Skiers, Snowboarders, Men, Women, Boys & Girls all participated in this annual event. World famous extreme skier and former local, Glen Plake, started this event in celebration of keeping mogul skiing and the challenge of skiing the Gunbarrel Run alive. Negotiating the 1600+ vertical foot Gunbarrel Run was challenging to start as the bumps were brutally hard but within an hour, conditions started to soften and continued to soften throughout the day. It is not only challenging but a grueling marathon as many who finish the 25 runs continue in the “Iron Man/Woman” category to see how many runs they could complete during the allotted time. Former Slovenian Ski Team member and local resident, Janez Demsar, continued his charge down the Gunbarrel to retain the championship of this event, completing 25 runs in 3 hours, 8 minutes 47 seconds. Congratulations go out to all who participated. The results are posted below:

The Heavenly Pro Ski Patrol hosted their annual Fundraising Party Sunday evening in a new venue, the top level of the Public Parking Garage at the Heavenly Village. It was well attended with at least 200+ folks attending. A San Diego based group, Tribal Seeds, laid down the Raggae as all enjoyed this spectacular views from atop the parking garage. It was a very social event with folks enjoying beer & wine, conversations about ski tales and a lot of fun with a variety of great prizes given out through the raffle. This annual fundraiser helps support a variety of organizations which include Tahoe Special Olympics and the Sierra Avalanche Center. Heavenly plans to stay open through Sunday, April 19, 2009.

Kirkwood Jammin’ XVI kicks off on Friday, April 10 featuring 3-days of Pond Skimming Contests through Easter Sunday and they are hosting the Burton Banked Slalom on April 10 for qualifying, and the Finals to follow on April 11. Kirkwood has announced their closing date of Sunday, April 26.

Sierra at Tahoe is hosting another College Week through Friday April 10 with discount rates for College Students with Student I.D. They will also host their Salsa Showdown this Saturday, April 11 at the Baja Grill at the bottom of the West Bowl Quad. Participants are to bring two cups of their Homemade Salsa to be judged at noon with the winner taking home a 09/10 Season Pass. A taco-eating contest will follow as well as some Piñata-busting fun!

All resorts will host Easter activities on Sunday including Worship Services.

Don’t put the shovel away, just yet and keep your fingers crossed for at least one more Powder Day!

Blue World Blog 3.30.09

March 30, 2009

Spring has definitely arrived at Lake Tahoe. What a difference from last Sunday as I was skiing the nearly 2 feet of fresh powder to glorious sunshine and spring conditions this past weekend.

On Tuesday, I took Howie Nave, Host & Emcee of Harvey’s Improv, up on the slopes of Heavenly to get him on the mountain and give him a few pointers on making turns. It was a glorious spring day with Blue Bird Skies and temperatures in 50’s. Howie and I go back a number of years and the last time we skied together was about 8 years ago after he arrived on the South Shore and we spent an afternoon at Kirkwood. I shot video for the Après Ski Show of the experience and if you know Howie, there’s never a dull moment as his personality and comical antics continues everywhere he goes. We stopped at the Heavenly Sports Rental shop in the California Base Lodge to get him equipped for the day and they set him up with Skis, Boots & Poles although he requested Czech’s instead of Poles. The Ski tech that was setting up his binding setting asked him what type of skier he was, i.e. Type 1, 2 or 3 and his response was, “I’m kind of a Moderate Skier – I don’t fall much. So what ever”…

Riding the Gunbarrel Lift was intimidating for him as he had never skied Heavenly and was wondering if the Gunbarrel run was the only run to come down… I assured him there was more mellow terrain at the top. On his first run down Patsy’s he started turning back and forth and continued to make comments and skied into a patch of soft powder and blew a ski off and went down. After picking up the pieces it took him a few attempts to get the ski back on, but was eventually successful and he headed back up to do it again. He did much better on his second run down, so we headed up to the next level, up the Powder Bowl Lift. We then skied Maggie’s until he was comfortable and did really well. I eventually took him up the Canyon Lift to ski down Heavenly’s signature, Ridge Run. We stopped a few times for him to take photos of the beautiful view of the Lake and surrounding mountains.

We stopped at the Gunbarrel Grill for lunch and enjoyed their Wine Country Array and great lunch menu that they offer. A great Salad Bar complete with fresh fruit, Cheeses, sautéed veggies, fresh baked bread with a variety of spreads and more. You then select either Seafood Chowder or 6-bean soup and an entrée. He chose the Champagne Chicken Pasta and I had the Scallops. Other entrees were a mini filet or lamp chops… For just a couple of dollars more than you would pay for a burger meal at the barbecue, you can enjoy and extraordinary sit down lunch with a beautiful view and table side service. It was a fun day on the mountain with Howie and he enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the mountain at Heavenly. Check out Howie’s Show this week at Harvey’s Improve featuring Johnny Steele and headliner Rocky LaPorte. They’ve recently changed the schedule and perform Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights at 9pm, with two shows, 8pm & 10pm on Saturday nights.

On Friday evening, after hosting my Après Ski Show on KMTN TV, to where I had “Gypsy” from the Horizon’s Carnival Cabaret as a guest, I joined the crew of KTHO AM590 at the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo in the convention center of the Montbleu Casino Resort & Spa. This is “THE” Chamber function to attend. A great networking opportunity as well as a chance to catch up with many of the local businesses and sample their food and offers. It was well attended and they even hosted a Silent Auction with a variety of offers from the Businesses that were displaying. All in all it was a great event.

Saturday evening I attended the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra’s annual Ham Bingo at the South Tahoe Recreation Center. This event was attended by up to 60 people, adults and kids, to win Easter Hams and other prizes and was a fund-raiser benefiting the South Tahoe Middle School’s Symphonic Band and String Orchestra. The event raised about $1000 for their program.

Strong winds were reported on the upper mountain, Sunday morning at Heavenly and it looked like the scheduled Lake Tahoe Pond Skimming Championships was going to be a “Blow Out”. By 10am the winds subsided and the entire mountain was opened. I hurried and got up on the mountain after hearing the news and headed to the top of the Gondola to video this fun event. Buck and the Heavenly race department crew were preparing the pond, which was reported to be 10 feet longer than previous years and they were removing ice chips from the surface and getting it ready as over 40 competitors signed up to try their Pond Skimming skills. $360 in prize money was up for grabs with various criteria, made up along the way, including best costume, tricks, creativity, etc. Aimi X from Heavenly’s PR department was also there to award the cash and pass out Springloaded 09 swag to participants and to the hundreds of spectators that lined both sides of the pond. It was a fun event as participants did their best to get across the Pond, to which many did make it. Those on Fat Skis seemed to have an advantage over most riding snowboards. All in all, a really fun event for both the participants and the spectators. Springloaded 09 continues this coming weekend with the Gunbarrel 25, hosted by Glen Plake on Saturday, April 4; followed by the Emily Cloutier Memorial Ski Race on World Cup run, Sunday, April 5 and the Heavenly Ski Patrol Annual Fundraising Party to be held on the roof (top level) of the Heavenly Village Parking Garage from 4pm-7pm. Heavenly plans to stay open through April 19.

On April 1, Sierra at Tahoe will host a Ski Green Day. A day of eco-focused activities that educate skiers and riders about simple steps they can take to make a positive impact on our local environment. With representatives from PG&E and Park 968 Hotel, Ski Green Day is an opportunity to enjoy the slopes and learn how to decrease your environmental footprint. Don't miss out on the "green" give-a-ways from Sierra Resort, SAC Tree Foundation, and PG&E. In addition, at 2pm, participate or just sit back and enjoy the laughs of the on-snow Fat Tire Frenzy bike race presented by Whatta Bike and New Belgium. Sign up in the Base Area. Over the weekend, April 4-5, Sierra will host the 6th annual Telegrass Festival with Telemark Ski Clinics, Free Demos and Bluegrass music. Sierra has not announced a closing date as of today.

Kirkwood is hosting the Marmot 6 Summit Pursuit on Saturday, April 4 and Kirkwood Jammin’ XVI on April 10 featuring Pond Skimming Contest through Easter Sunday and the Burton Banked Slalom April 10-11. They have announced their closing date of April 26.

Spooner Lake Cross Country and Camp Richardson Mountain Sports Center are closed for the season due to the lack of snow coverage, but Hope Valley XC Outdoor Center remains open with 20 miles of groomed cross country and snow shoe trails.

Most all resorts will remain open through Easter Sunday so get out and enjoy the Great Spring Conditions at Lake Tahoe.

Have a Great Week,

Curtis Fong

Blue World Blog 3.23.09

March 23, 2009

What an action packed week it’s been since my last Blog. Spring-like weather returned to the slopes of Lake Tahoe up until this weekend…

I attended the annual Tahoe Douglas Rotary St. Patrick’s dinner and wine tasting fundraiser held at Harrah’s Tahoe convention center. It was well attended with folks wearing green and corned beef & cabbage was the main entrée, duh. There were many vintners serving their wines - including Tahoe Ridge Winery - and the local Mt. Tallac Brewing Company served their home brewed beer. It was a fun event and music was provided by JJ Music Company.

Saturday was action packed with a Winter Storm Warning was posted to be in effect that afternoon. After completing my daily morning routine of producing my ski report, I headed to Zephyr Cove, along with KMTN TV, to cover the “Polar Plunge”, a fundraiser for Special Olympics. I got there a little early and decided to enjoy breakfast in the historic Zephyr Cove Lodge where groups of Snowmobilers were gathering to head up to Spooner Summit to enjoy Snowmobiling on the crest of the Sierra. The individuals and teams of Plungers started arriving and checking in from 10am ‘til noon. I was amazed that around 300 participants dedicated their fundraising efforts and bodies to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe. Many were dressed in costumes and themes. Teams were from the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department lead by Fire Chief, Lorenzo Gigliotti; Greater Nevada Credit Union, Carson City Probation Department, California Highway Patrol, Nevada Highway Patrol, UC Davis Campus Police (dressed as the Aggie Football Team), Families, Friends, Special Olympians and many more including a combined team from several local Kiwanis Clubs, lead by Lt. Governor Mike Foster and featured George Alm dressed in his Tutu, a pink boa, cowboy hat and knee high white Go-Go Boots… Tom Wendell from KTHO AM590 was dress as a Classic Rocker and played Air Guitar (blow-up) while in the water… even Bubba Gump’s Costume Shrimp was on hand to cheer on the Plungers… Last year they were barely able to muster 40 participants and this year was a resounding success and way too much fun with 300 plungers raising $40,000 for Special Olympics.

After producing the Après Ski Show on KMTN TV, the crew went down to the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa to videotape the Special Presentation of Carnival Cabaret, starring Gypsy, in the MontBleu Theater. This was the first time the full production show was featured in the big showroom as opposed to the intimate setting of the Golden Cabaret in the Horizon Casino Resort. Before the performance Michael & Michelle McKinney, owners of KMTN TV, and I dined at the newly renovated Café Del Soul, which is now set up like a Mediterranean Sidewalk Café and is a 24 hour restaurant. Not only breakfast served around the clock, but a new menu featuring some great Mediterranean dishes. We got to set up the camera in the light booth above the showroom and the showroom was set up in a more intimate setting with curtains behind the audience confining seating to the lower show room tiers. The show opened with Tom Davis, dressed as Elton John, driving Miss Daisy (Gypsy) in his ‘63 Cadillac Convertible. Gypsy was too much as he engaged the audience and introduced the variety of Super Stars with the theme of this being a reunion featuring performances from previous super stars that performed in the show room. Barbara Streisand, Cher, Bette Midler, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton, Reba McIntire, Joan Rivers and more were featured. 300+ folks were thoroughly entertained.

That evening the storm kicked in and to the surprise of everyone, Sunday morning ski reports came in with tons of fresh snow. Even though I was only able to catch 3 hours of sleep, I hurried my report procedures to make it to the slopes at Heavenly by 9am. It was awesome… one of the best Powder days all year. Heavenly reported 14-20” of fresh snow and I started with two untracked runs down Dipper Knob. I moved over to Milky Way Bowl and continued to find three untracked lanes and yet a fourth run along the Kellebrew Canyon rope line. I was there when they opened the gates into Mott Canyon and got first tracks down Sunny Side and headed back up and got first tracks in the Pine Nuts. Soon the word was out and skiers and riders were enjoying cutting powder turns in Mott’s and I was blown away with the lift line at the bottom of the Chair… the most folks I’ve seen in there in a long time with big smiles and frosted mustaches and beards… I continued to ski up tracked powder in the trees on either side of Dipper and Comet and finished my day visiting my buddy, Heavenly’s long time Stagecoach Bartender, Stu Coffey.

Storm totals were reported at 16-20” at Heavenly; 19-33” at Sierra and 24-36” at Kirkwood where they are hosting their Experts Only College Spring Break Party from March 23 through 27. Great tunes, contests, prizes daily, $30 lift tickets with your Kirkwood College Card or better yet, you can purchase a College Spring Pass for $79 and ski/ride every day through April 26. They are continuing to offer their Spring Pass for only $99, good to ski and ride through April 26. Their 2009/10 Season Passes go on sale on March 28. Visit Kirkwood.com for all the details.

Sierra at Tahoe is also hosting college week with discounted lift ticket through Friday with valid college I.D. They have also introduced their 2009/10 Season Passes for sale that include free skiing/riding for the remainder of this season. They have a variety of passes available in conjunction with sister resort, Northstar at Tahoe. Visit SierraatTahoe.com for details or to purchase online.

Heavenly has kicked off their Spring Loaded 09 promotion with the finals of their Jackpot Rail Jam Series Saturday March 28, at the base of World Cup Run from 4 - 7pm. They will follow up with the Pond Skimming Championships of Tahoe on Sunday, March 29; Glen Plake’s Gunbarrel 25 on Saturday, April 4 and the Heavenly Ski Patrol’s Fundraiser, held on the roof of the Heavenly Village Parking Garage, on Sunday April 5. The Heavenly Season Pass is also on sale and is one of the best values allowing free skiing/riding for the remainder of this season through April 19, as well as all next year with a few black out dates. Check it all out at SkiHeavenly.com

Coming up this Friday is the Business Expo sponsored by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, from 4-8pm at the Convention Center at MontBleu. Saturday evening March 28, is the 47th Annual Lake Valley Fireman’s Ball at MontBleu and the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe-Sierra’s Annual Ham Bingo at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

Have a Great Week!

Blue World Blog 3.16.09

Monday March 16, 2009

Skiing and Riding conditions held up this past week with several days of glorious sunshine and light winds. I was able to get out on the mountain at Heavenly last Tuesday and it was a beautiful day and the great weather seemed to bring out all the long time locals to enjoy the slopes. I skied all over the Nevada side and everywhere I went conditions were good… Milky Way Bowl, Mott’s Canyon, Comet Trees and even down North Bowl. The snow was mid winter with chalky packed powder, especially on the north facing runs.

It turned out to be a social day recalling ski days of the past with local long-time skiers. Mitch from Mitchell’s Jewelers, Rich Botini from Pyramid Peak and Bill Killebrew, former owner of Heavenly, Mark Gant from Tahoe Sports Ltd, Jerry Raye and others were also enjoying a relaxing no pressure day on the slopes. Beth Gebhardt was in town this past week hanging out with all the old time bump skiers and Steve Peache was working his new High Def video camera and shooting video in the Comet Little Dipper bumps preparing a promotion piece to air on KMTN to promote the upcoming Glen Plake’s Gunbarrel 25 event at Heavenly scheduled for April 4.

Spring like weather continued thru out the week and Thursday, I found myself along with Michael McKinney meeting my buddy, Dan Giesin from the SF Chronicle and On the Snow, at Homewood Mountain Resort for a day of re-discovering their slopes. It has been many years since I have had a chance to ski Homewood. With Emerald Bay Road (Hwy 89) open, the journey around beautiful Emerald Bay and along the West Shore was scenic and only about 20 miles from the South Tahoe Y. McKinney brought the infamous Slope Cycle along and after a discussion with Homewood’s Ski Patrol, was allowed to take it up the Mountain. I must say that this Bike Board does draw a lot of attention with lots of folks watching in awe and many asking questions about it. Even their Ski Patrol took turns riding the Slope Cycle. The runs were surprisingly fun and scenic as well with beautiful views of the Lake, and from highway, 2/3rd of the Mountain is “Out of Sight”.

I continued to test my new VIO helmet cam and shot video of many of our runs and even mounted the cameral backwards and had Dan ski behind me so he was skiing towards the camera and not me shooting down from behind… the video came out great. Look for it soon.

Heavenly hosted it’s second in their series of Jackpot Rail Jams on Saturday evening on World Cup with another event coming up this Saturday, March 21 and the finals the following Saturday, March 28. Heavenly re-introduced their Heavenly Season Pass Sale this past weekend, rolling back pricing to the 2007/08 rates… with the offer to purchase now and ski / ride for the remainder of this season as well as all of next year. Check out the great season pass deals at SkiHeavenly.Com.

Sierra at Tahoe had several events this past weekend as well with their Highlander Event, a USASA Super Pipe competition and their “Flaunt it Like a Girl” Slopestyle and Rail Jam. They will be hosting their 3rd Annual “Buckle Up Big Air” event on Saturday, March 21, in Memory of Greg Smith and to help spread Seat Belt Safety Awareness. Check out their website at www.Kirkwood.Com.

This past Saturday evening, David Spade was performing at the MontBleu Theater and it was a great comedy show. Prior to the show, I decided to try dining at the Horizon’s Town Square Buffet, now open Saturday, Sunday & Monday. It was all good and you can’t beat the price, only $9.95 for adults and $5.95 for kids. David Spade was scheduled to be a guest on my Après Ski Show but went skiing at Heavenly all day and was too tired to join me in the Studio. His show was fun and looked to be pretty much sold out. After the show, I was fortunate to be invited to meet him back stage and I had to give him some S**@! about not making the TV show… He said he had too much fun skiing at Heavenly and needed to rest up before his performance. He was kind enough to take pictures with me and the other invited guests.

Don’t miss all the fun – Corned beef & Cabbage Feeds, Parties and Pub Crawls on St. Patrick’s Day. Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is hosting their annual St. Pat’s Celebration at Harrah’s from 6pm-10pm; Montbleu’s Opal Ultra Lounge is hosting a party with Blue Turtle Seduction performing; Of course, Murphy’s Irish Pub is hosting a Party and helping to celebrate the 46th birthday of KTHO AM590. McP’s Irish Pub & the Tudor Pub are also hosting St. Paddy Day parties with live music as well.

Also don’t miss the Northern California Special Olympics “Polar Bear Plunge” coming up Saturday, March 21 at Zephyr Cove Marina at 10am.

Spring will officially arrive this weekend and there’s plenty of skiing & riding offered. There are no announced closing dates from any of the resorts, as of this week, and all resorts are expected to remain open through at least Easter Sunday, April 12.

Have a great week and be safe.

Another Punxsutawney Phil week with anywhere from 6 to 8 feet of snow dropping on the mountaintops around Lake Tahoe since my last blog. Up to 4 feet fell Tuesday night thru Wednesday morning and powder hounds rejoiced to find the first big dump and deep powder on upper mountain runs and bowls. Many reported it was too deep and heavy and was a lot of work to ski and ride in it. But, then again, we’ve not had one of those 4-foot dumps all season and I’m sure those other muscles that haven’t been used all season, got a good work out.

On Tuesday, after Heavenly reported 30” of new snow overnight, Michael McKinney, the owner of KMTN TV decided to head up and get some freshies riding a Slope Cycle Bike Board, a new snow riding device that is like riding a bike on the slopes (www.slopecycle.com). He went up with a couple of friends to ride Heavenly’s Nevada Side and said, “I had the best day of my life on the slopes and the worst day…” About 3:00pm he found himself lost and down a canyon that was difficult to get out of. Luckily he had a cell phone and cell coverage, as he was able to communicate with his friends. He attempted to hike out, but was waist deep in snow and it made it extremely challenging to post hole out. McKinney continued to hike as the snow started to fall and darkness started to descend. Douglas County Search and Rescue teams were called out to search for him. He found refuge in a rock formation, but continued to pace a path in and out in hopes that he would be visible to searchers. He was able to communicate with the Search & Rescue team and after a series of calls and audible cues (sirens), they were able to center in on his location. He saw a light beam a couple of ridges over and was lucky to direct the rescuers to shine the beam towards his direction and for them to hike towards that area. Around 10:30pm, Ryder Evans, who was leading the team, was the first one to find him.

The next day, we dedicated a 15-minute segment on the Après Ski Show for me to interview McKinney about his experience - and what to do and what not to do… He was glad to have a cell phone and recommends always skiing and riding with a buddy and if one was to find themselves lost or in an unfamiliar terrain, not to wait, but to call for assistance immediately. Michael publicly, on the air, thanked the efforts of Douglas County Search & Rescue team and was glad they had found him and promises never to place himself or their search teams in that predicament again. Lesson learned!

Douglas County Search & Rescue is a volunteer organization and works off donations. Most use their own personal equipment for searches and put themselves in harms way every time they are called upon. For more information and to make donations please visit: www.dcsar.co.douglas.nv.us

Thursday night was the 23rd annual Kiwanis Sunrisers Mid Winter Beach Party and Crab Feed and I found myself stuffed with all the cracked crab I wanted. The event looked to be a huge success as it was well attended and their Silent Auction won me a couple items to include 20 games of bowling from Tahoe Bowl and some Oakley Goggles and a couple of Heavenly Hoodies from Sunrise Ski Shop.

Saturday morning started early, not as early as Sunday morning (daylight savings time) as I hurried to get my ski report updated, radio report and website as well as the podcast done to make it to the base of Heavenly’s World Cup Run by 9:00am. Northern California Special Olympic held their Annual Celebrity WinterFest, and I was asked to be their on-hill announcer for this great event. I donate as much time as I can to Special Olympics as it is a great cause and I enjoy working and assisting in training their athletes. It was an absolutely beautiful “Blue Bird” day as Celebrities from the big screen as well as most popular television series were on hand, along with Special Olympians and Sponsoring Corporate Teams to race head-to-head in their fund raising efforts. Buck and the Heavenly Race Department did an outstanding job to prep the racecourse and set up the finish arena. It is always a fun event as the celebrities play to the crowds and have fun competing down the racecourse.

Actor, Andy Lauer joined me during the Celebrity/Corporate Challenge race, in-between rounds, to add some color to the announcing. By the end of day I was starting to lose my voice from the non-stop play-by-play announcing, but it was rewarding for me to do my part for Special Olympics. For more information on the results and how you can help Northern California Special Olympics, please visit: www.celebritywinterfest.com

Northern California Special Olympics will also have their Fundraising Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, March 21 at Zephyr Cove Marina starting at 10:00am. Individuals that register and participate and raise at least $100 will receive a Special Olympics Polar Plunge Sweatshirt and enjoy the after party on the M.S. Dixie II. I’ve been asked to make the plunge. Come out and Support Special Olympics. Visit: www.sonc.org/polarplunge.

This week, Sierra at Tahoe, who reported 37-64” of new snow last week, is offering a $25 Learn to Ski/Ride package thru March 13. You must reserve your beginner lesson package online at SierraatTahoe.com. The package includes 2.5-hour beginner lesson, equipment rental and beginner lift ticket – what a deal!

Kirkwood, who reported 78-92” storm total this past week, continues to offer their Mid Winter Season Pass for only $259 for adults, $199 for Juniors and $129 for kids… all unrestricted with no blackouts thru the end of the season. They also offer the Tahoe/Kirkwood Upgrade: Bring your season pass from any other Lake Tahoe Resort and purchase 3 lift tickets for $99. Conditions are awesome at Tahoe. Come on up so you can get down on plenty of mid-winter snow!

February 23, 2009

President’s Week has come and gone. Local retail and rental shops had brisk business, especially on those stormy days when the shopping and indoor activities seemed to be a good option. Oh yeah, the restaurants were busy as well. Lots of new snow fell this past week and I had a chance to ski Heavenly on Tuesday. 8 inches of fresh was reported that morning so I had to at least get a few hours of finding the good stuff under my skis.

I got to the Stagecoach Parking lot about 9:15am and it was almost full and headed to the upper mountain. Riding up the lift I noticed only a few tracks under the lift, so I delayed heading up further to take a warm up, under the lift. Very… Very… Nice!

By the time I got to the upper mountain there were a good number of skiers and riders starting to congregate at Dipper and Comet Lifts. I rode up Dipper and B-Lined it to Milky Way Bowl. Lots of folks had the same idea… I traversed across the bowl and jumped in down past the tree line (Stu’s Run) and caught several powder turns. I headed back up to do it again and decided to traverse all the way over the Killebrew Canyon rope line and ski the trees down… Sweet! After that, yet another ride up Dipper to see what was left down Dipper Knob and it was pretty well skied out but the snow was great. From there I continued past the Galaxy Lift and headed on the cat track to catch a few turns in Galaxy Glades, another stash that many skiers and riders bypass, and found a route, although a much lower angle, to satisfy my addiction for powder!

I rode Galaxy back up and headed to Comet. The bumps were starting to form on Little Dipper, but the tree skiing was still really good… so, two more runs down the trees and I was ready for a break. I stopped in to my perch at the Star Bar and had my usual warm up drink… Poor man’s mocha… ½ Coffee & ½ Hot Chocolate with a topping of a little whipped cream…

I was also preoccupied thinking about my North American Snow Sports Journalist Western Winter Summit coming up the next week and decided I should start preparing for my trip, so I rode Comet one more time to head back to Stagecoach Lodge.

On the way down the mountain the impulse hit me and I found myself loading the Olympic Express to check out the “WP”. Some tracks were in there but still lots of pow left to my surprise, and then continued down through North Bowl Trees and down to the base of the North Bowl Lift. The ride up North Bowl, as with Galaxy, is slow but a welcomed recovery ride to rest my screamin’ legs. I headed back down to finish up at Stagecoach Lodge before heading out. A great morning on the Heavenly mountain, and now you know where some of my powder stashes are.

This past week Kirkwood was also able to get both sections of the Covered Wagon Platter Lifts fired up to access Emigrant Basin as well as the New Vista T-Bar at the top of Chair #2 to access, what we used to call, the Moon Cornice and Boogie Slide in Thunder Saddle, so if you are heading out, check it out. Plenty of snow at the Wood.

With more snow coming this week, the conditions on the mountain continue to get better and better and more upper mountain off-piste terrain is getting better and better as well.

If you plan on skiing or riding off-piste, do as I say and not as I do… Always ski and ride with a buddy. Be Safe and stay in-bounds.

Have a great week,

Curtis Fong

It’s President’s Day and it’s snowing… it’s been snowing all week and the conditions at the South Shore resorts continue to improve… not that were bad, but more fresh snow continues to allow skiers and riders more off-piste, trees and open bowl terrain. As of this morning snow storm accumulation totals at Heavenly were 25-33” of new snow; Sierra at Tahoe is reporting 25-50” and Kirkwood a whopping 82-108” of freshly fallen natural snow this past week. This on top of their already accumulated base depths.

Kirkwood has a bunch of “Screamin’ Deals” on their website so visit Kirkwood.com and Click to save. Sierra-at-Tahoe continues to offer their 3 pack of tickets that comes out to $49 a day and can be used any day till the end of the season.

I got out to Sierra at Tahoe this past Tuesday to sample the freshies as there was a break that morning from storms. Conditions were the best all year and the skiing and riding was great. I headed to my favorite runs in the West Bowl and warmed up with some cruisers. My son, Matthew, came along and I was able to shoot some fresh video for my Après Ski Show on KMTN TV. I shot video of him as we rode thru their Terrain Park on Bashful with all the hits and jumps. Sierra opened their backcountry gates that day, but we didn’t have a chance to ski/ride out in Huckleberry Canyon. We rode the fresh pow on the backside as well and in the trees. The Fresh snow was light and fluffy and the groomed snow perfect.

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce hosted their monthly Chamber BAHM (Business After Hours Mixer) on Thursday evening at the Marcus Ashley Galleries in the Village Shopping Center. It was a well-attended event as it was billed as their SWEET HEART BAHM. Local Business folks enjoy socializing and networking while enjoying great appetizers and beautiful fine art.

Valentine’s Day was Saturday and thousands of skiers & riders came into Tahoe to enjoy the Presidents Weekend and this Presidents week. Valentine’s Day is also Lake Tahoe Discovery Day… It was on February 14 in 1844, that John C. Fremont along with Scout Kit Carson, while they were mapping the west for the US Geological Survey, discovered a BIG MOUNTAIN LAKE from high atop a peak above what is now known as Carson Pass. It is a debate as to whether it was from the top of Steven’s Peak or the top of Red Peak that they saw the Lake. They did not see or identify, from that viewpoint, an established river drainage canyon dropping to the West, so they continued up and over what is now known as Carson Pass. A bit of Lake Tahoe history there for yah.

I took my Valentine to dinner at the Blue Water Bistro, located behind the Timber Cove Lodge & Resort. This is one of only a few restaurants with a great view of the Lake as it sits on the Timber Cove Pier and a great menu of healthy and organic choices. That evening they featured a special Valentine’s 5- course dinner. Champagne & a rose for the Lady; Sweet Potato Crab Cakes appetizer; Choice of Soup or Salad; Filet & Lobster Tail entrée & dessert… all for only $49.95 per person. The regular Steak & Lobster was posted at $47.95, so, why not enjoy it all for a couple of bucks more. Blue Water Bistro is a great place to dine with a beautiful view.

After dinner, we headed to the MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa to enjoy an evening of comedy with Dana Carvey, front man from Saturday Night Live and famous for his skits like “Hans & Franz”, “Wayne’s World” and “The Church Lady”. The Show was sold out and the show room was filled with both locals as well as hundreds of visitors from all over. He was hilarious and even played guitar with his band. After the show, we were invited back stage to meet Dana and to take pictures. That was real special! We ended up playing some video poker in front of MontBleu’s Café Del Sol, which has been recently changed to their 24-hour restaurant. Check it out… they feature a new Mediterranean style menu. After that, we closed down the Fox & Hound Restaurant up on Tramway Drive… A great Valentine’s night out on the town.

As for some special events, Sierra-at-Tahoe will be hosting a 3-Day Women’s Ski/Ride Clinic starting Sunday, February 22-24. Kirkwood will be hosting the Rip Curl Grom Search on Saturday, February 21… for ages 16 and younger, looking for the next upcoming snowboarders and promising more prizes than one can carry; and on Sunday, February 22, they will host the USASA Skier/Boarder Cross event. Heavenly has opened online registration for their popular Jack Pot Rail Jam series for both Skiers and Snowboarders happening March 14 and March 21. Top 5 finalists from the two prelim events will compete in the Finals on March 28 for Over $4000 in cash and prizes.

Presidents Week skiing & riding will be epic with lots of fresh snow still coming and a little break in the weather towards the end of the week. Get out and enjoy everything that Lake Tahoe’s South Shore has to offer!

See you on the Slopes,

What a difference from last week’s report where bicyclist, sports car enthusiasts and Golfers were enjoying the spring like weather. This weekend was a direct flip flop.

Punxsutawney Phil was right last Monday and Winter has returned to the High Sierra and Lake Tahoe!

As of this morning Heavenly reported 7-10” of new with a storm total of 14-20”. Sierra at Tahoe got 12-14” of new and storm total of 29”; and Kirkwood reports 12-16” of new with a 22-24” storm total.

Last Thursday, I was invited to attend a special Locals Hospitality/Press Day with Lake Tahoe Cruises’ Tahoe Queen Après Ski Shuttle. The morning started early with the motor coach pickup at the Horizon Casino Resort at 7:45am. We enjoyed the boxed breakfast on the bus ride around the east shore en route to Squaw Valley.

When we arrived at Squaw the clouds started to engulf the mountain peaks and the light became very flat, even with proper goggles, it was still hard to see. I got up the Funitel and headed up Emigrant to ski over to Shirley Lake. This side of the mountain goes down a basin and is wind protected and is usually groomed out and a great place to take a couple of warm up runs. With the flat light, there are also several runs cut with trees along the side that offer the best visibility in flat-lit conditions.

We took several runs down and some made it up Granite Chief to sample the snow, then we headed down the mountain to Red Dog, the other side of the valley to sample the runs there. The snow was in good shape. This front side of Squaw is really where the vertical is with both Red Dog and KT22 taking you up offering 1300 & 2000 vertical feet of drop.

Later we grabbed some lunch in the Gold Coast Station before we headed back down the mountain run and decided to ride the Cable Car up to High Camp. Most were content to enjoy cocktails in the bar at High Camp while some folks enjoyed The Olympic Ice Pavilion experience.

At 4:00pm we met the motor coaches and were transported to the pier in Tahoe City where the Tahoe Queen was waiting for us. We were able to leave all our gear, except for what we wanted to take on the boat, loaded on the bus. This was the first time I had been on the Tahoe Queen since its refurbishing last spring. I must say they have improved the experience with large scenic windows; a more relaxed interior lay out including a lounge area behind the bandstand and redesigned bars on both decks and more.

We were treated to an incredible and delicious buffet with a variety of items from Salad, Fish, Beef Wellington, fresh carved turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed veggies and more… AND THEN… the Steve Walker Band, a legend on the Tahoe Queen for 25 years, started up with all the popular dance tunes. Everyone had a great time dancing and enjoying the Après Ski Party experience. It’s a must do for any visitor as this is a unique offering at Lake Tahoe.

This week the Tahoe Queen will be offering the Ski Shuttle on Wednesday and Thursday as well as the usual cruise on Friday. They will also have a special Valentine’s Day evening dinner dance cruise on the Queen as well as the M.S. Dixie II. On Sunday, Feb 15, they are hosting a special Pints & Paddles Cruise. Zephyr Cove Snowmobiles will be resuming daily operations as well. Check out ZephyrCove.com or call 1-800-23-TAHOE.

I got to Kirkwood on Sunday and found some untracked turns in a few of my favorite stashes. I rode Cornice to the top and jumped into Jim’s Run where soft packed powder bumps were just starting to form… into the trees along the side to catch a couple of powder turns and back on the run. I took a couple of cruisers down Sentinel Bowl, which was buffed and Upper Look-Out Janek, which was also groomed. Kirkwood works the wench cat often and you can find steep high angled runs groomed and buffed of bumps.

I found some untracked, enough to satisfy 5 to 6 powder turns, down into the Drain accessed from both Buckboard off chair 11 and Lost Cabin off chair 5. To the backside was the next destination. As I rode up Chair 2, Thunder Saddle looked inviting and I made the decision to come back to the front side down the Saddle. At the top of Chair 4, the Covered Wagon Platter lift lower section was operating taking skiers and riders up to the other side of the Wave and I decided to ski some cruisers down Happiness Is and Larry’s Lip and of course came back over and down Thunder Saddle where the snow was perfect.

Later, I took a break to visit Sully at Bub’s and caught the end of the Celtics vs. Spurs game. Kirkwood is offering the Mid Winter Season Pass for $259 that is valid from February 16 through the end of season with no black out dates. Also great deals for Kirkwood pass holders to pick up buddy tickets and if you have a season pass from any other resort you can purchase 3 days of lift tickets for only $99.

On my way back down Carson Pass into Hope Valley, there were lots of other winter sports enthusiasts riding Snowmobiles out of Blue Lake Road and folks enjoying Dog Sled rides as well. There’s anywhere from 2 to 4 feet of snow in Hope Valley and up towards Carson Pass, maybe 5 to 6 feet. I stopped in to see the folks at Hope Valley Outdoors located in their Yurt at Pickett’s Junction (Hwy 88/89). The Snow Park lot was almost full and several cross country skiers and folks on snowshoes were enjoying the day. Snow shoeing is a great winter recreational activity for the entire family and you can rent snowshoes for kids as well. The learning curve is mostly learning how to put them on and after 3 steps walking forward you got it. Hope Valley Outdoors has 20 Miles of groomed trails and 40 miles of marked skier and snowshoe packed trails. There are no trail fees and no snow park permit required. They have equipment rentals and lessons available and you can bring your dog.

With more snow predicted for this week, the Presidents Weekend and week should prove to be enjoyable whether you ski, snowboard, snow shoe, cross country ski or ride snow mobiles. Winter is back!

Have a great week and we’ll see you on the slopes.
